Trans-sphenoidal Surgery with an endonasal technique

What is it?

Trans-sphenoidal Surgery with an endonasal technique

Before, it was necessary to open the cranium to extract a mass or tumor from the hypophysis, an organ of the human body that regulates a person’s growth.   Today, thanks to medical advances, it is possible to extract it through the nose or the mouth.
The hypophysis surgery with a pure endonasal technique, as this procedure is known medically, begins with the introduction of an endoscope, through a natural orifice such as the nose until it reaches the base of the cranium, to remove a tumor without making any incisions in the face or the mouth, an aspect that benefits the patient aesthetically.

It is worthy to note that eighty six interventions, like the one described above, were performed between 2000 and 2006, without a single complication. It is a technique that reduces surgery and hospitalization time.

Benefits

  • A less traumatic technique is used.
  • It is faster.
  • Less painful.
  • More effective.
  • There are less complications / infections.
  • There are lesser hospital occupancies.
  • Less sick days.

Infrastructure

The Nuestra Señora de los Remedios Clinic’s modern surgery wards use state of the art technology to perform highly complex procedures; among these, we have endoscope and fluoroscope equipment.

This clinical service is supported by all the areas of this institution, including hospitalization, diagnostic images and the intensive and intermediate care units.

Specialized human resources:

The patients eligible for trans-sphenoidal surgery are handled by a human group of highly qualified specialists, among which we have:

Dr. Carlos Acevedo

Neurosurgeon with a fellowship in cranium surgery from the George Washington University, where he is currently an attached instructor for neurological surgery.

Dr. Fernando Sánchez

Neurosurgeon from Universidad del Valle, with 16 years of experience in this area.  He was the Neurosurgery Coordinator of Hospital Universitario del Valle (Valle University Hospital).

Dr. Fernando Arbeláez
