Stereotaxic Surgery

What is it?

Stereotaxic Surgery

It is a surgery to correct movement disorders. This procedure leads to the preparation of a Cartesian map of the brain, allowing doctors to reach the precise location where abnormal movements take place, and neutralize them.

The Clinica Nuestra Señora de los Remedios  is the only one in Cali that has a Praezis Plus image fusion software that allows it to make a map of the brain with a great degree of precision. This feature leads to lesser complications and longer lasting results.

What type of patients benefit from this technique?

This is a procedure for persons with the following health problems:

  • Patients with movement disorders, with greater experience at a level of Parkinson’s disease, dystonias (abnormal muscle contractions) and tremors.
  • Patients with cerebral injuries with restricted access and high surgical risk.
  • Patients requiring craniotomies (opening of the cranium for cerebral surgery) caused by the difficulty in locating the injury.
  • Psychiatric patients or patients with pain that cannot be treated pharmacologically.
  • Patients requiring chemotherapy or guided radiotherapy as part of their treatment.

Benefits from a surgery performed in the Clínica de los Remedios

  • A fast diagnosis.
  • A less invasive treatment that does not affect brain tissues the way craniotomies or other more invasive surgeries do.
  • The millimetric or submillimetric precision of the procedure. This is due to the fact that the Clínica Nuestra Señora de los Remedios uses the only Praezis Plus software in the city to fuse images.
  • A shorter period of occupancy in the Intensive Care Unit and Hospitalization time because in most cases these surgeries are performed on fully conscious patients. Local anesthesia and sedatives are used, and surgical wounds are small.
  • There are a lesser number of complications due to the aforementioned.

International Cooperation

We have contacts in hospitals in Canada, the United States and Mexico to discuss and consult on management for patients with difficult diagnoses and treatments.

Human Resources

Due to the high technical complexity of stereotaxis surgery, it is necessary that it be performed by an experienced surgical team. In the Clínica Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, patients are handled by a highly qualified team of human specialists with great experience in the medical area.

Our institution’s stereotaxis surgery team is led by doctor Pablo Miguel Arango Pava, a Neurosurgeon from Universidad del Valle and a Sub-specialist in Stereotaxis Functional Neurosurgery and Radiosurgery from Toronto University, Ontario (Canada).

Technical Resources

  • Leksell like Stereotaxis Frame, one of the most precise, versatile and valid in many research studies. It is one of the newest equipment in the country.
  • Praezis Plus of Tamed Image Fusion Software, the only one in the city.
  • Leksell type Radiofrequency Generator for rhizotomies, to work on injuries in the cerebral region.
  • A set of needles for stereotaxis to do biopsies, placement of electrodes, pain treatment.
