Video-assisted – Thoracoscopic Surgery, the only one of its kind in Colombia

Spinal column surgery for the segment of the thorax requires that the surgeon performs a large incision, through which he introduces instruments to allow him to separate the muscles, reach the spinal column and correct the disease.  It is a painful procedure for the patient who in addition to being left with a large scar, must remain in bed for several weeks.

In light of this traditional way to operate the spinal column rises another modality known as video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, which in contrast to the foregoing, means performing small 10 millimeter incisions between the ribs, through which a thin instrument, made of fiber optics, is introduced.  This material transmits images from inside the thorax to a screen where the specialist can see and then correct problems such as fractures, tumors, deformities, infections, hyperhidrosis and scoliosis.

It is a minimally invasive and ambulatory technique. The Nuestra Señora de los Remedios Clinic is the only one center in the country equipped with this type of technology.
